Most Holy Trinity Parish, Cresco recently issued the following announcement.
Ideally, Catholics should approach the Eucharist during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Nevertheless, it is not always possible for the faithful to do so without grave inconvenience. In the case of sickness, this grave inconvenience may be physical or it may be moral. If the sickness deprives the individual of all his energy and thus he lacks the strength to get out of bed, then the grave inconvenience is physical. If the person is able to get out of bed and move around, but his illness is a highly contagious disease, then the grave inconvenience is moral in that he ought not risk the health of the general public.
Given the current pandemic, we appreciate that some people are not comfortable gathering in larger numbers. For this reason, we are celebrating Mass outside where one can maintain a safe distance from others or one could even remain in his/her vehicle. However, if someone is not joining at Mass because he/she is fearful, then we remind you that our longstanding Catholic understanding is that when circumstances prevent one from receiving Holy Communion, it is possible to make an Act of Spiritual Communion, which is a source of grace. Communion is brought to one’s home, hospital or other living accommodations only because of grave inconvenience, of which fear of the virus does not qualify.
Spiritual Communion is an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament and lovingly em-brace him at a time or in circumstances when one cannot receive Him in sacramental Communion. The most common reason for making an Act of Spiritual Communion is when a person cannot attend Mass. Acts of Spiritual Communion increase our desire to receive sacramental Communion and help us avoid the sins that would make us unable to receive Holy Communion worthily.
Spiritual Communion Prayer
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love you above all things and I desire to receive you in my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, Come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there And unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you.
Amen.
Please note that if you would like to bring Holy Communion to the elderly, the sick, or the infirm, then you need to inform the Pastor prior to the celebration of Mass.
