Basilica of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church recently issued the following announcement.
Behind us earth and sin so that we may gain the things above. So
great and outstanding a possession is the cross that he who wins it
has won a treasure. Rightly could I call this treasure the fairest of all
fair things and the costliest, in fact as well as in name, for on it and
through it and for its sake the riches of salvation that had been lost
were restored to us… Therefore, the cross is something
wonderfully great and honorable. It is great because through the
cross the many noble acts of Christ found their consummation –
very many indeed, for both his miracles and his sufferings were fully
rewarded with victory. The cross is honorable because it is both the
sign of God’s suffering and the trophy of his victory. It stands for his
suffering because on it he freely suffered unto death. But it is also
his trophy because it was the means by which the devil was
wounded and death conquered; the barred gates of hell were
smashed, and the cross became the one common salvation of the
whole world.
Diaconate
Rev. Mr. Chris Livelsberger was ordained to the Permanent
Diaconate this weekend. Please keep him and his family in your
prayers as he begins his ministry.
Second Collections
The following second collections will be taken in the coming weeks:
This weekend—the Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land
Next weekend (Sept. 19-20)—Disaster relief collection for areas
affected by Hurricane Laura and other disasters (see below)
Archbishop Gomez, President of the USCCB has stated :“The funds
collected in this special appeal will become part of the Bishops
Emergency Disaster Fund and will be used to support the efforts of
Catholic Charities USA and/or Catholic Relief Services, the official
relief agencies of the U.S. Catholic Church, as they and their local
agencies respond to immediate emergency needs for such
necessities as water, food, shelter, and medical care, and aid in
long-term rebuilding and recovery efforts; and the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops for pastoral and reconstruction
needs of the Church.” Bishop Gainer commented, “Just a few years
ago I had the privilege of preaching the annual retreat to the priests
of the Lake Charles Diocese. I was very impressed by their zeal
and dedication. Now they and the people they serve need our
help. I realize that the pandemic has impacted our families and
parishes but I know the generosity of our Catholic faithful and trust
that our sacrifices will not go unrewarded.”
In two weeks (Sept. 26-28)—Missionary Cooperative Weekend
(Fr. Howard will make the appeal on behalf of the missionary)
Because of the restrictions regarding how collections are taken, a
basket will be labeled and set up in the back of the church.
Otherwise you may contribute in the future as long as you use a
separate envelope or put a note indicating what the donation is for.
