With the Dobbs v. Jackson Supreme Court decision that determined that the question of abortion is up to the state legislators, the March for Life organization announced a new theme and plan for upcoming events.
“On Jan. 20 we will celebrate the 50th March for Life & the momentous overturn of Roe v Wade!” March for Life tweeted. “We’ll honor those who have gone before us making this historic victory possible, & we'll present the strategic plan -the NEXT STEPS- for building a culture of life in this moment in time.”
The theme for 2023 is “Next steps: Marching into a post-Roe America.”
The Pennsylvania March for Life 2022 occurred on Sept. 19 this year. It began with morning mass, prayer, a march and a number of testimonials from congresspersons and Archbishop Nelson Perez, the state’s group website recaps. The date for the Pennsylvania March for Life 2023 has not been announced yet.
The National Catholic Register says the national march will end at the U.S. Capitol in 2023; in the past, marches went toward and ended near the Supreme Court.
“What we’d really like to do is celebrate the momentous victory of the overturn of Roe, (and) honor those who’ve marched before us,” Jeannie Mancini, president of the March for Life, told the Register.
The national March will continue to happen every January. “Our largest group of participants in the March are students” and moving it to a different month “would be a very hard time for young people,” Mancini said.
“Roe and [the loss of] 63 million Americans is a scar in our culture’s history, in our country’s history and it’s not something that we’ll quickly move past,” she added. “While we celebrate that we’re at this new moment… we will continue to march in January.”
The group plans to switch its focus to state and federal pro-life cases, including fighting to prevent the “Women’s Health Protection Act.” If enacted, Mancini argues, that act “would undo all the good work that’s happening at the state level, and it would go way further than codifying Roe.”
Mancini said the group will continue promoting marches on state capitals, hoping to bring it to at least 20 states.
At the national event in January, former Colts NFL coach Tony Dungy will speak, as will Jonathan Roumie, who stars as Jesus in “The Chosen,” the Register reports.
The Catholic Church has long maintained a strong stance against abortion, regardless of evolving biological theories about when exactly life begins, according to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. The Catechism states the view clearly. ”Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion,” it says. “This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law" (No. 2271).
