Not long after President Joe Biden tweeted about his plan to sign a law that will codify Roe if his party wins enough congressional spots in November, a Catholic News Agency report hinted that the message could alienate Catholic voters.

“The final say about your right to choose rests with you,” Biden said in a tweet Wednesday. “If you do your part and vote, Democratic leaders in Congress will do their part. I’ll do my part. With your support, I will sign a law codifying Roe in January.”

Later that day, Biden gave a speech expanding on the matter. That Democratic National Committee speech at the Howard Theatre focused on abortion, as Democratic candidates are facing “uphill battles” in the polls, Catholic News Agency (CNA) reported

Biden called the 2022 midterms “the most consequential election in history” as far as Roe is concerned, CNA continued. Democrats currently hold the House and the Senate by slim margins.

The November vote will be vital as all 435 House seats are up for election, along with 35 seats in the Senate, CNA said. Additionally, 36 governorships are going to the voters.

Biden has said Republicans are “extremists,” and he hinted that a national abortion ban is imminent if Republicans take Congress.

“Today in America, there are women who have been turned away from emergency rooms while having miscarriages, losing wanted pregnancies, and told they need to wait until they are sicker before they get the care they need. Doctors and nurses fear they can face criminal charges,” Biden said, CNA reported.

With Biden’s approval rating and popularity at an all-time low, CNA surmises that Biden is trying to turn the vote into a one-topic election.

Live-Action, a pro-life advocacy group, has contradicted Biden’s assertion, reporting that abortion laws within the states, specifically since Roe was overturned, all explicitly state that treatment for miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies are still legal. Live-Action contends that pro-choice advocates are attempting to “scare women” into believing that they will not receive care from a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. Live-Action then listed all of the state abortion laws where this is spelled out.

Biden’s statement did not go over well with Catholic advocates.

“Catholics are appalled by the unprecedented abortion extremism pursued by the nation’s second Catholic president,” CatholicVote President Brian Burch said in a release. “While Americans struggle with record inflation, the president of the United States has nothing to offer but a pledge to expand the right to violently destroy innocent unborn children – up until birth and for any reason.”

He urged American bishops to address the matter more publicly.

“We need Church leaders to step up and make clear that no Catholic can support candidates or policies that would make America one of the most extreme abortion nations in the world,” he said.

The Catechism, one of the Church’s guidebooks of sorts, says, “Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed as an ends or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law” (No. 2271).

In related abortion news, Archbishop Nelson Perez of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia tweeted about Respect Life Month earlier this month.

“October is Respect Life Month! Please join me in praying for the renewal of respect for life this month and always!” Perez said on Twitter. “May God bless you abundantly.”
